Baba did not establish a Math or Ashram under his personal ownership, and he repeatedly rejected royal display, costly regalia and the accumulation of property. His daily life remained that of a fakir dependent on bhiksha and free from personal possessions.

Some devotees wondered whether Sri Upasani Baba might continue Baba’s work, but no formal succession was established. Sai Baba left no appointed heir, institutional seat or person authorised to replace him. His work continued through the devotees, writings, institutions and spiritual centres connected with his name.

The chapter also cautions against later claims by individuals who present themselves as Sai Baba’s successor or Avatar. Spiritual powers, clairvoyance or devotion alone do not make anyone Sai Baba’s equal. The conclusion is that God’s seat is never vacant: devotees should seek Baba through his known life, teachings and continuing grace rather than through a claimant to his seat.

What this account invites us to reflect on

The account invites reflection on the difference between inheriting an institution and carrying a living teaching. Sai Baba’s presence is continued wherever remembrance becomes service, compassion and spiritual discipline.

Editorial note: This page is a concise paraphrase for web presentation and does not reproduce the complete chapter.
