Sai Baba, however, saw a different purpose in him. From the beginning Baba urged him to leave the police profession, but Ganu resisted. He wanted advancement, income and recognition, and he treated Baba\u2019s repeated advice as an obstacle to his own plans.<\/p>\n<p>Ganu\u2019s police work brought him into difficult situations. On one occasion, Baba\u2019s intervention helped him obtain the authority needed to deal with a local disturbance. On another, Ganu pursued the dacoit Khana Bhil, only to discover that circumstances surrounding the pursuit were moving beyond ordinary police control. Baba repeatedly showed him that the protection he relied on was not the power of his uniform, but the grace of the Guru he was reluctant to obey.<\/p>\n<p>After repeated pressures and dangers, Ganu\u2019s police career ended. Baba assured him that he would provide for Ganu and his family, and directed him toward the work for which he was naturally fitted: kirtan, devotional singing and the public retelling of spiritual truths. Ganu\u2019s wife later died without children, and he was able to devote himself fully to this service.<\/p>\n<h3>From police officer to kirtankar<\/h3>\n<p>Das Ganu became a powerful Marathi kirtankar. His voice, memory, poetry and ability to connect scripture with the life of ordinary people drew large audiences. He spoke of Sai Baba as a living Samartha Satpurusha and directed listeners toward Shirdi. His kirtans helped bring tens of thousands of people into contact with Baba, and his writing preserved many stories and teachings for devotees who had never met Baba in the body.<\/p>\n<p>His literary work grew out of the same mission. He wrote and sang about Baba\u2019s life and composed accounts that helped establish the early Sai tradition. He also worked on explanations of difficult religious texts. When he struggled with the Isa Upanishad, Baba did not give him a scholastic lecture. A washerwoman\u2019s daughter singing joyfully while doing her work became the means through which Ganu understood the teaching. Baba showed him that spiritual truth could be recognised in a simple life when the mind was free from intellectual pride.<\/p>\n<h3>Faith still had to be learned<\/h3>\n<p>Although Ganu praised Baba as God in song, his inner faith remained uneven. He wanted spiritual experiences on his own terms and sometimes believed that Baba was keeping him away from the God he wished to see at Pandharpur. When he asked Baba for realisation, Baba answered that Ganu was already seeing Him and that this itself was the promised vision. The answer challenged Ganu to recognise the living Guru instead of searching for a separate experience that would confirm his own expectations.<\/p>\n<p>Ganu\u2019s pride was exposed by another saint who asked why a kirtankar should still carry so much <em>ahamkara<\/em>. Ganu had spoken of Baba\u2019s greatness while retaining the feeling that he understood and represented that greatness better than others. Baba gradually turned him toward humility, repentance and the recognition that devotion is not proved by public praise alone.<\/p>\n<h3>Protection and correction<\/h3>\n<p>Baba\u2019s guidance covered Ganu\u2019s journeys and daily conduct. When Ganu and an agricultural inspector planned to travel despite Baba\u2019s instruction to leave immediately, they obeyed and were spared a danger on the road. Baba also challenged Ganu\u2019s habit of calling people enemies. When Ganu refused food because it came from a person he disliked, Baba reminded him that hatred and discrimination obstruct spiritual vision.<\/p>\n<p>Ganu was a sharp critic and sometimes attacked another devotee in public. Baba pointed out that the man\u2019s work was helping to spread Sai\u2019s name, while Ganu\u2019s criticism was weakening the same work. Ganu recognised the correction, went to the devotee, asked forgiveness and accepted a more generous view of service. Baba was not merely using Ganu\u2019s talent; He was purifying the character of the person who carried the message.<\/p>\n<h3>Nama, kirtan and the Sai movement<\/h3>\n<p>Baba repeatedly directed Ganu toward Nama Smaran and the repetition of the Divine Name. He encouraged him to read the Bhagavata, undertake a seven-day reading when appropriate, and perform kirtans at Shirdi. Ganu\u2019s devotional songs, annual harikathas and writings became a living bridge between Baba\u2019s experiences and the public. Through him, stories of Baba\u2019s early life, His Guru and His devotees reached a wide Marathi audience.<\/p>\n<p>The author gives Das Ganu a central place among Baba\u2019s apostles because his service continued beyond personal devotion. Mahlsapathy helped establish the first worship; Chandorkar carried Baba\u2019s influence into educated and official circles; Das Ganu carried it through song, poetry, kathas and books. His life shows both the power of a gifted public servant and the long discipline required to convert talent, ambition and ego into instruments of bhakti.<\/p>\n<h3>What this account invites us to reflect on<\/h3>\n<p>Das Ganu\u2019s transformation is not presented as effortless. He resisted Baba, misunderstood Him, sought recognition and repeatedly had to be corrected. Yet the same force that once drove him toward police authority became the energy of his kirtan service.
