The Upanishadic answer is more demanding: Brahman is not merely what the eye sees or the mind thinks; it is that by which seeing and thinking are possible.

The discussion therefore distinguishes devotion to a personal form from the realisation of the underlying Reality. Stories of Janabai, Namdev and other saints show God appearing in a form that the devotee can love, while Sai devotees continue to report Baba’s help and appearances in the form known at Shirdi. These experiences may confirm faith, but the chapter warns against confusing visions or powers with established realisation.

A Brahma-nishta saint is recognised by the state in which he lives: freedom from selfish desire, fearlessness, compassion, equality and the ability to remain engaged in the world without losing the awareness of Brahman. Sai Baba’s continuing presence is presented in this light—not as an invitation to collect marvels, but as guidance toward the truth that is within and everywhere.

What this account invites us to reflect on

The account invites reflection on the highest purpose of spiritual life. Admiration, belief and unusual experiences can begin the journey; the fulfilment is inner transformation, steady remembrance and recognition of the Divine beyond every limited form.

Editorial note: This page is a concise paraphrase for web presentation and does not reproduce the complete chapter.
