The Maruti temple and the mosque were both small and dilapidated. Hindu headmen stood at the top of village society, while the few Muslim families were mostly poor artisans and labourers.

Against this modest setting Baba’s daily life unfolded. The mosque, the neem tree, the chavadi, the village well and the homes through which he went for bhiksha became the places where people encountered him. The chapter links village life with concrete episodes of grace: Pillai’s guinea-worm suffering was relieved through an apparently accidental act by Abdul, while Bhimaji’s serious chest disease was worked through painful dreams after Baba accepted responsibility for his karmic burden and sent him to stay in a wet verandah.

After Baba’s fame spread, roads, buildings, shops, water supply and pilgrim facilities grew around the old village. Yet the chapter insists that the importance of Shirdi is not merely material. Every lane and gathering carries the memory of Baba’s presence, and the mosque that once seemed a neglected structure became the centre from which Sai worship spread.

What this account invites us to reflect on

The account invites readers to see how a sacred centre can emerge from an ordinary and difficult environment. Shirdi’s holiness is tied to lived service, healing, remembrance and the continuing relationship between Baba and those who come to him.

Editorial note: This page is a concise paraphrase for web presentation and does not reproduce the complete chapter.
