Power may be used for good, harm or indifferent purposes. The nature of a Samartha Sadguru is revealed by the combination of realisation, purity, compassion, responsibility and the way power is used for the welfare of others.<\/p>\n<h3>How people understood Baba<\/h3>\n<p>Many villagers first saw only a poor, begging fakir living in a mosque. Others, with more sensitivity, recognised a saint in his selfless acts, even-mindedness and freedom from greed and anger. Some approached him because he could discover hidden facts, speak about the past or future, diagnose trouble and provide help. Each group understood one aspect of Baba, but no single description exhausted him.<\/p>\n<p>The chapter compares this difficulty with the way people misunderstood Krishna by seeing only the human form. Baba could say that he was merely a fakir and could also reveal a knowledge and presence that made devotees regard him as God, Guru, guardian or the indwelling Self. The difference lay in the capacity of the person approaching him.<\/p>\n<h3>The functions of a Samartha Sadguru<\/h3>\n<p>Baba healed bodies, protected people from danger, gave material assistance, read minds, corrected conduct, arranged circumstances and answered devotees according to their needs. He could appear as the devotee\u2019s chosen deity or as the form of a previous Guru, preserving rather than destroying the devotee\u2019s earlier faith.<\/p>\n<p>He also worked through tests, delays and refusals. A request that was denied could be a lesson in patience; a rebuke could remove pride; a blessing could restore courage; and a material gift could carry a spiritual responsibility. His response changed according to the person, but the purpose remained the same: to lessen fear, attachment and ignorance and to awaken the Divine nature.<\/p>\n<h3>Help at the moment of death<\/h3>\n<p>The chapter treats Sadgati\u2014the right spiritual passage at death\u2014as one of the highest forms of help Baba could give. Yet it also makes clear that Baba\u2019s functions cannot be reduced to this one gift. He served people in the ordinary details of life, protected their bodies and families, and guided them toward a freedom that would continue beyond any single event.<\/p>\n<h3>What this account invites us to reflect on<\/h3>\n<p>The value of a saint\u2019s power lies in its purpose.
