Baba\u2019s Muslim appearance, his residence in a mosque and the worship offered by Hindus made him especially difficult for rigid observers to accept.<\/p>\n<h3>Orthodoxy and misunderstanding<\/h3>\n<p>Some critics dismissed the lighting of the mosque lamps with water as magic performed through an inferior power. Others condemned the worship itself because a human being was being honoured in a mosque. Railway staff and other people near Shirdi warned travellers that Baba was dangerous, immoral or unfit for spiritual work. Their certainty was often based on hearsay rather than a patient study of his conduct and the experiences of devotees.<\/p>\n<p>The chapter also describes objections based on small external details. One educated man questioned why Baba, said to have been connected with Venkusa and Venkatesa worship, did not wear the Vaishnava mark. The answer was that Baba normally wore no mark at all; when devotees applied horizontal or vertical marks, he accepted them to avoid hurting their feelings. The external sign belonged to the devotee\u2019s relationship, not to Baba\u2019s own sectarian identity.<\/p>\n<h3>One God behind many forms<\/h3>\n<p>Baba remained neutral between Shiva, Vishnu, Rama, Datta, Khandoba, Devi, Khuda and Allah. He did not treat these names as rival gods. His concern was whether the devotee approached with love, sincerity and a heart free from cruelty. He could therefore allow different communities to worship him through their own forms without making him the property of one community.<\/p>\n<h3>The test of a spiritual movement<\/h3>\n<p>The chapter answers the objection that worship of a saint places a human being on the level of God by pointing to the purpose and result of the relationship. Sai worship was not meant to excuse bad conduct or replace truth and duty. Its value had to be seen in whether it removed pride, increased compassion and brought the devotee closer to God. Baba\u2019s miracle mattered not merely as a marvel, but because it corrected the merchants\u2019 falsehood and hardness of heart.<\/p>\n<h3>What this account invites us to reflect on<\/h3>\n<p>The chapter makes room for honest questions while warning against prejudice disguised as certainty.
