The highest Guru knows what is genuinely good for the soul, has realised that truth personally and is able and willing to lead another person toward it. The chapter therefore places spiritual welfare above temporary comfort or worldly success.<\/p>\n<h3>Realisation, purity and responsibility<\/h3>\n<p>From the Vedantic standpoint, the Guru must be established in the realisation of Atman and Brahman; from the bhakti standpoint, he must be steeped in love of the Personal God. The two are not opposed. A teacher who cannot cross the ocean of ignorance himself cannot carry disciples across.<\/p>\n<p>Because genuine realisation is difficult to recognise from outward appearance, seekers must exercise discrimination. Reputation, unusual powers or a solemn manner are not proof. The chapter warns against teachers who are immoral, greedy, violent, hypocritical, impatient, given to lust or anger, hostile to the unity of God, or interested in using spiritual claims for worldly gain.<\/p>\n<h3>Sai Baba\u2019s example<\/h3>\n<p>The account presents Sai Baba as a Samartha Sadguru whose power was joined to purity, compassion and freedom from personal gain. Kavle Patel\u2019s experience illustrates the difference. When Patel\u2019s other Guru urged him to replace an old goddess image, Baba advised him not to do so. Patel ignored the warning, an epidemic followed, and the other Guru demanded half of Patel\u2019s land before offering help. The experience exposed greed and false authority, while Baba\u2019s advice had been free of self-interest.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, Baba did not encourage people to abandon a decent Guru merely because another teacher appeared more impressive. Where there was no serious moral corruption, he advised loyalty. The Guru-disciple relationship was treated as personal and sacred, not as a search for novelty.<\/p>\n<h3>The qualities the disciple must seek<\/h3>\n<p>The chapter links the Guru\u2019s work with discrimination, detachment, calmness, patience, faith and the longing for liberation. A genuine Guru kindles the disciple\u2019s lamp from his own lamp; the same light is carried forward through the Guru-parampara. The Guru\u2019s qualification is finally tested not by display but by the peace, clarity, courage and spiritual growth awakened in the disciple.<\/p>\n<h3>What this account invites us to reflect on<\/h3>\n<p>The chapter asks the reader to combine devotion with discernment.
