His life cannot be separated from the Gurus who shaped him, from the disciples who depended on him or from the promises and responsibilities he accepted on their behalf. Although Baba often concealed his real nature and moved among people as if he were an ordinary or even eccentric fakir, the experiences of devotees gradually revealed the working of a Samartha Sadguru.<\/p>\n<h3>What the word Guru means<\/h3>\n<p>The chapter begins with the meaning of Guru as one who removes darkness and ignorance. In ordinary life a Guru may teach a skill, an ethical discipline, a mantra or a religious practice. Higher teachers lead the disciple toward detachment, knowledge of the Self and liberation. The Sufi terms murshad and talib express the same relationship in another religious vocabulary, and Baba himself spoke of his own Murshad as the one who freed him from identification with the body.<\/p>\n<h3>Many stages of guidance<\/h3>\n<p>The text distinguishes teachers who give secular instruction, moral direction or mantras from those who cultivate vairagya, explain the great truths of the Upanishads and lead the disciple toward realisation. The highest Guru is not merely an instructor who gives information; he accepts responsibility for the disciple\u2019s transformation and welfare. A Samartha Sadguru uses every available power and method to carry the disciple toward the goal.<\/p>\n<p>Sai Baba is presented as an example of this highest responsibility. He undertook the welfare of devotees such as H. S. Dixit, N. G. Chandorkar, Bandra Master and M. B. Rege, not only in their immediate circumstances but across the deeper course of their spiritual lives. His guidance could appear as a blessing, a rebuke, a test, an unexpected command or a promise fulfilled at the right moment.<\/p>\n<h3>Guru worship as a living relationship<\/h3>\n<p>To worship the Guru is therefore to listen, remember, serve and allow the Guru\u2019s teaching to correct the habits of the ego. Ceremony may express reverence, but the real worship is trust joined with conduct. Baba accepted flowers, offerings and praise while repeatedly turning devotees toward faith, discipline, surrender and the recognition of the Divine within.<\/p>\n<h3>What this account invites us to reflect on<\/h3>\n<p>The Guru principle in Sai Baba\u2019s life is a relationship of responsibility and transformation.
