This chapter turns from the public expansion of Sai worship to its inward purpose. Flowers, water, food, arati and other observances are the visible cup; the devotion poured into them is the essence.<\/p>\n<h3>When form becomes feeling<\/h3>\n<p>The chapter explains worship through the Sanskrit ideas of puja and upasana. A devotee may offer flowers, water, food, scent and praise, but at the same time the mind and speech must turn toward the meaning of the act. At its deepest, worship becomes absorption in the one worshipped, until the separate sense of \u201cI am the actor\u201d grows quiet.<\/p>\n<p>The story of Kannappa illustrates this distinction. The hunter offered the Shiva linga whatever he himself valued, including water carried in his mouth and roasted meat. When the image appeared to bleed, Kannappa gave his own eye and was ready to sacrifice the second. The episode contrasts cold correctness with unreserved love: God accepted the motive and intensity of the offering rather than judging it by outward convention.<\/p>\n<h3>The ordinary devotee\u2019s gradual path<\/h3>\n<p>Not everyone begins with Kannappa\u2019s single-minded devotion. For most people, regular worship is the discipline through which feeling is cultivated. The chapter sets out the nine modes of devotion: hearing the accounts of God and saints, singing or repeating the Divine Name, remembering, serving the feet, formal worship, prostration, service, companionship and surrender of the self.<\/p>\n<p>These modes show that outer and inner worship are not enemies. Listening, singing, visiting, offering, serving and keeping holy company gradually make the heart more receptive. The form is useful when it trains attention, gratitude and love; it becomes empty only when performed without inward participation.<\/p>\n<h3>What worship gives to the devotee<\/h3>\n<p>Worship may begin in fear, illness, need or the desire for help. It may also begin with the question of who we are and how the universe is related to the Divine. In either case, the practical benefit is only the beginning. Through contact with a saint or Guru, the devotee receives not merely relief but an opportunity for discipline, confidence and spiritual growth.<\/p>\n<h3>What this account invites us to reflect on<\/h3>\n<p>The chapter asks the reader to look beyond the visible act without dismissing it.
